North Korea says satellite launch fails, plans to try again

North Korea’s attempt to put a military reconnaissance satellite in space failed Wednesday when the second stage of the rocket malfunctioned, state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, adding that Pyongyang planned to carry out a second launch as soon as possible.

“The new satellite vehicle rocket, Chollima-1, crashed into the West Sea as it lost propulsion due to an abnormal startup of the engine on the 2nd stage after the 1st stage was separated during normal flight,” KCNA said.

The report said “the reliability and stability of the new engine system” was “low” and the fuel used “unstable,” leading to the mission’s failure.

North Korea’s National Space Development Agency said it would investigate the failure “urgently” and carry out another launch after new testing, KCNA reported.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said it identified an object presumed to be part of what North Korea claims to be its space launch vehicle in the sea about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Eocheong Island at around 8:05 a.m. and is in the process of obtaining it.

Earlier, South Korea’s military said Pyongyang fired a “space projectile,” triggering emergency alerts in Seoul and Japan, weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered officials to prepare to launch the country’s first military reconnaissance satellite.

Both countries later canceled those alerts when it became clear there was no danger to civilian areas from the North Korean launch.

Analysts said Wednesday morning’s events illustrated problems for both North and South Korea, for Pyongyang in its space program and for Seoul in its public alert process.

“North Korean space efforts have consistently failed, indicating that whereas its military ballistic capabilities are being developed, its space launch capabilities are not proceeding at the same pace of development,” said Malcolm Davis, a senior analyst at The Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

Preliminary Turkish election results show Erdogan leading in presidential runoff

Preliminary results in Turkey’s presidential runoff vote on Sunday showed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of his rival as the leader fights to stretch his rule into a third decade.

With 91.55% of the ballots counted, Erdogan received 52.61% of the votes, according to unofficial preliminary results published by state-run Anadolu agency, while opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu received 47.39%.

Voter turnout is 85.41%, according to Anadolu.

Earlier on Sunday, Erdogan asked his supporters “to stay at the ballot boxes until results are finalized.”

“Now is the time to protect the will of the people which we hold in the highest esteem,” Erdogan wrote on his Twitter account.

Every Turkish citizen has a right to watch the vote count at their ballot boxes, and doing so has become something of a tradition in Turkey.

Spokesman for Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Faik Oztrak, seemingly warned Erdogan against carrying out any speeches to supporters until the official election results have been announced.

“No one should muddy the waters with balcony speeches,” Oztrak said on Sunday, referring to Erdogan’s traditional election-night style speech. “We’re sending a clear warning: No one should try to make this into a ‘fait accompli’ until the results are final.”

“I say this with emphasis: we’ll protect the will of the nation until the end and we will win,” he said.

Erdogan is going head-to-head against Kilicdaroglu, a 74-year-old bureaucrat and leader of the left-leaning CHP.

In the first round of voting on May 14, Erdogan secured a nearly five-point lead over Kilicdaroglu but fell short of the 50% threshold needed to win.

Which generation needs more praise? Australian police commissioner clarifies Gen Z comment

Since about the birth of boomers, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of generations has been a perilous exercise almost guaranteed to cause offense.

So when Australia’s Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner offered an “interesting” aside on generational differences while addressing senators in Parliament House on Thursday, there was little chance it would pass unnoticed.

Referring to the “Pearls in Policing Conference” held in Sydney this week, where he sat next to police officers from Toronto and the United States, Commissioner Reece Kershaw said: “We learned that Gen Z, the younger generation, need three times a week praise from their supervisors, the next generation only need three times a year, and my generation only need once a year.”

The comment prompted raised eyebrows in the Australian parliamentary room, and no end of commentary on social media discussing the relative neediness of the nation’s youngest workers.

The matter may have petered out, but the AFP sought to clarify the issue on Friday with a two-line statement: “Reports that AFP Commissioner believes different generations require different level of praise are incorrect. The Commissioner was referring to information recently presented to a policing forum.”

That information came from Michael McQueen, a social researcher and author of several books, including “How to Prepare Now for What’s Next,” who presented at the conference.

Greenpeace to close in Russia after its activities are deemed ‘undesirable’

The Russian branch of Greenpeace International has been forced to shut down after officials in the country declared the organization’s activities as “undesirable.”

Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office said in a Telegram statement Friday that it decided to “recognize Greenpeace’s activities as undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation,” and claimed that the activities of Greenpeace International “represent a threat to the fundamental constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation.”

Greenpeace International and its branch in Russia condemned the decision in two statements released Friday.

“We express our categorical disagreement with the decision of the Prosecutor General’s Office. This decision makes it illegal for any Greenpeace activity to continue in Russia. Therefore, the Russian branch of Greenpeace will be forced to close,” Greenpeace Russia’s statement said.

Greenpeace International also slammed the decision, saying “this misguided decision effectively indicates that it is ‘undesirable’ to protect nature in Russia.”

“It’s clear that Greenpeace International – and subsequently Greenpeace Russia – was labeled undesirable because we do not allow disastrous plans threatening nature to be carried out,” Greenpeace International’s statement added.

Dozens of organizations have been classified as “undesirable” by Russian authorities since 2015, according to Reuters, a designation which makes it effectively impossible for them to operate.

Inter Milan vs Man City: This is the Nerazzurri's Secret Weapon in the Champions League Final - Arrigo Sacchi

Inter Milan is considered a team that has a secret weapon, so they cannot be underestimated when they face Manchester City in the Champions League Final later.

The Champions League Final match Manchester City vs Inter Milan will take place in Istanbul on 11 June 2023 at 02.00 WIB.

Legendary coach Arrigo Sacchi analyzes and predicts the Champions League final between Inter Milan vs Manchester City.

Inter Milan may not be expected to qualify for the European finals in the European club football calendar this season.

But an impressive and mature season for Inzaghi's squad takes them to dreamland, to Istanbul, where they will face Pep Guardiola's side, who have always been dominant.

Inter Milan are the clear underdogs going into the Champions League final, with an estimated market value of their squad of around €530 million about half that of Manchester City's €1 billion side.

But will still dream of lifting a trophy, something they last did in the 2009 -2010 season.

The Nerazzurri will be hoping to overcome the Cityzens in Istanbul and will be thinking back to their match against Barcelona in the group stage.

They will face a tough task though, given Manchester City's complete dominance in their Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.

“The final that will happen between Manchester City and Inter Milan? England team heavy favorite? How can Inzaghi's men stop Guardiola's orchestra?” wrote Arrigo Sacchi quoted by Tribun Jogja from La Gazzetta dello Sport via Football Italia.

“All the questions that, after The Citizens' incredible win over Real Madrid, have been the subject of discussion for the fans.

“Guessing the future is impossible, but at least someone can predict it.

“I have to admit that City really impressed me: they surrounded Real, they overwhelmed them, they didn't let them breathe with suffocating and very high pressure, they played at a crazy pace and with an intensity and pace rarely seen.

“Guardiola's men are everywhere. Continuous and always well-synced movements, crystal-clear ideas, great self-sacrifice and a game plan that truly resembles sheet music.
